PURPA Update
As part of Blue Ridge Electric’s determination process for the standards set forth in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005), the cooperative held a public hearing on January 30 to give interested members the opportunity to make comments and discuss related issues.
The EPAct 2005 amended the Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 (PURPA), with the goal of encouraging conservation of energy, making more efficient use of electric utility facilities, and helping ensure equitable rates for consumers.
The standards of the EPAct 2005 include Net Metering, Time Based Metering, Interconnection, Fuel Source Diversity, and Fossil Fuel Generation Efficiency. A decision on the appropriateness to implement each individual standard will be made on or before July 31, 2007, and will be based on the Cooperative’s studies and input received from members. The decisions will be communicated in writing through official notice.
Public comments and staff recommendations appear on Blue Ridge Electric’s web site at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com. For more information, contact Brian Crutchfield at
