Lenoir, North Carolina (December 22, 2006) – In the spirit of the season, members of Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation have rallied to support the cooperative’s new Operation Round Up program. As of December 21, 16.3 percent of the cooperative’s members—just over 11,000 households—had signed up to support Operation Round Up after a recruitment period that started in early September.
With the intent of assisting local people and communities in Blue Ridge Electric’s service area, Operation Round Up is a member-supported program with administrative costs covered by the cooperative. Giving is easy and painless: members simply agree to contribute by allowing their bill to be rounded up the next dollar, with difference donated to Operation Round Up.
Also funding Operation Round Up will be profits produced by the cooperative’s propane and heating fuels subsidiary, Blue Ridge Energies.
Funds donated to Operation Round Up are managed by the Blue Ridge Members Foundation, a 501 3 (c) organization. The Members Foundation is governed by members of Blue Ridge Electric who are representatives from the cooperative’s Member Advisory Committees in each district.
As soon as sufficient funding is obtained to begin awarding funds, the Foundation will solicit applications and select recipients based on the impact the award would have on quality of life issues in local communities.
The marketing campaign included telemarketing, newspaper, radio and other communications.
“I’d like to thank all the members who answered our call to join Operation Round Up,” said Lee Layton, chief operating officer. “The ultimate goal of Operation Round Up is to make northwest North Carolina an even better place to live and work. Our members have indicated their passion and commitment to the same goal.”
Members of Blue Ridge Electric are encouraged to continue supporting and signing up for Operation Round Up in order for the program to have the greatest impact on local communities.
To sign up for Operation Round Up, call any local Blue Ridge Electric office or sign up online at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com.
