Lenoir, North Carolina (December 14, 2007) – “Can you help me? We can use anything and it doesn’t even have to be new. . . hand-me-downs are fine!”

That was the heartfelt plea a Blue Ridge Elecric Membership Corporation employee heard this week from a member visiting the office. It was a question that elicted tears, but also action.

As the story of the Blue Ridge Electric member circulated throughout the cooperative’s district office in Lenoir, Santa’s “elves” sprang into action. Within two short days a sleigh of new items were collected: clothing items, toys, kitchen appliances and food cards magically appeared.

“How could we let this family not have Christmas?” asked Jeff Benfield, Caldwell operations manager. “The folks I work with are very aware of how fortunate we are to have jobs in this current economy and I’m extremely proud of the generous spirit shown by our office staff and linemen when this true need became known.”

Blue Ridge Electric employees say efforts like this pull them together in the true spirit of Christmas.

Blue Ridge Electric is a member-owned electric cooperative serving some 70,000 members in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes and Alexander counties.
