Boone, North Carolina (November 19, 2003 - 11:30 a.m.) – By 11:30 a.m., linemen with Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation had worked through flooding and high winds to restore most of the morning’s 1,536 outages in Watauga County, which were primarily concentrated in the Vilas community.

Flooding in the lower Powder Horn community is hampering power restoration efforts for 124 members who were affected by severe weather that hit the area early morning on Wednesday. As soon as water levels subside, power restoration efforts will continue in that area.

In addition, linemen also restored power to 210 members in Ashe County and had completed restoration for all but one member in Alleghany County affected by weather-related outages.

If members experience an outage, they are encouraged to report it by calling the cooperative’s automated outage reporting system, Powerline, at 1-800-448-2383.

Think Safety!

Downed power lines are likely during high winds and storms. If residents see downed power lines, stay away! Downed power lines can still be energized and therefore deadly if someone touches the line or touches an object the line is in contact with.

If you see a downed power line, notify Blue Ridge Electric immediately. In addition, never drive your vehicle across a downed power line. If a power line falls over your car while you are driving, stay inside your car until you receive appropriate help.

Blue Ridge Electric serves over 66,000 members in northwest North Carolina. Its subsidiary, Blue Ridge Energies, provides propane, heating fuels, and commercial gasoline from offices in Lenoir, Boone, Hickory and West Jefferson.
