Lenoir, North Carolina (July 18, 2008)Trent Wakefield of Granite Falls Middle School participated in the Roy Williams Basketball Camp in Chapel Hill on a scholarship from Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation. Trent is the son of Doug and Tamara Wakefield.

Trent was one of the 29 deserving young men awarded scholarships from North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives to attend the Roy Williams Basketball Camp this year. Winners of the Roy Williams Basketball Camp scholarship were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed an application that included an essay about the students’ reason for wanting to participate in the camp. Trent was selected based on the excellence of his application and accompanying essay. The Roy Williams Basketball Camp was held June 21 -26 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is excited to have had the opportunity to send this commendable young co-op member to a basketball camp with a nationally renowned coach,” said Grey Scheer, director of community relations.

This is the third year that North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives, including Blue Ridge EMC, have sponsored young men to attend the Roy Williams Camp. North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives have also provided scholarships for young women to attend the Kay Yow Basketball Camp in Raleigh for the past five years.

The Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship program is part of the electric cooperatives’ ongoing commitment to North Carolina communities.

Blue Ridge Electric is a member-owned cooperative serving some 73,000 members in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Alexander, Wilkes and Avery counties.
