Boone, North Carolina (August 13, 2007) - Jewel Thomas, computer aided design (CAD) operator at Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation, recently distinguished herself by completing all requirements to become a Certified Geographic Information System Professional. Geographical information systems (GIS) are systems that stores, manage, analyze and edit geographic related data within a mapping system.

“I applied to become a Certified GIS Professional because I’m always looking for ways to expand my knowledge base,” said Thomas. “It took 18 months to complete the certification but I feel confident it will help me work faster and more accurately.”

“Certification is a way to document an individual’s expertise in the GIS/Mapping field,” said Mike High, director of engineering services at Blue Ridge Electric. “It also distinguishes them as ethical and competent in the GIS field. We’re extremely proud of Jewel’s accomplishment.”
Thomas is a graduate of Appalachian State University and has worked for Blue Ridge Electric since 1994.

Blue Ridge Electric is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative serving some 70,000 member-owners in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Alexander and Wilkes counties.
