Washington, DC, (July 19, 2006) – Congressman Patrick McHenry recently met with officials from Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation and other electric cooperatives serving local consumers to discuss key areas of importance to providing reliable, affordable electricity.

Blue Ridge Electric made the trip to Washington, DC, as part of the North Carolina Association of Electric Cooperatives’ annual legislative conference. Electric cooperatives make the annual trip and work continuously throughout the year to update elected officials on issues facing electric cooperatives and the consumers they serve with energy and energy related services.

Meeting with Representative McHenry on behalf of Blue Ridge Electric were: Doug Johnson, chief executive officer, Kenneth Greene, vice president of the board of directors, Joy Coffey, assistant secretary-treasurer of the board of directors, and Renee Whitener, director of public relations.
“It is vital that our members of Congress understand how federal decisions can impact the rates for members of non-profit electric cooperatives,” Johnson said.

“We appreciate Representative McHenry taking time to understand our issues.”

NCAEC, with headquarters in Raleigh, serves the state’s 27 electric cooperatives by providing training, safety and education services.

Blue Ridge Electric is a local, member-owned electric cooperative serving some 69,000 consumers in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes and Alexander counties. Its subsidiary, Blue Ridge Energies, provides propane, gas logs and other hearth accessories from offices in Catawba, Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe and Alleghany counties.
