West Jefferson, North Carolina (August 10, 2004) – As part of its commitment to community, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation has awarded scholarships to several local students in the cooperative’s service area.

The scholarships are designed to assist students in their educational goals and are awarded annually to deserving high school seniors and adults living within the cooperative’s service territory. This year Blue Ridge Electric offered five $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors seeking a four-year degree and seven $800 scholarships to students seeking a two-year vocational/technical degree. Students from Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes Counties were eligible for up to ten Goodman-Hurt Scholarships totaling $14,000.

Doug Cox, son of Ander and Martha Cox of West Jefferson, received a $2,000 Goodman-Hurt Scholarship. He will attend Appalachian State University. Receiving a Goodman-Hurt $800 scholarship was Jennifer Mahala, daughter of Everett and Ann Mahala of Creston, who will attend CCC&TI.

Brandi Vannoy, daughter of Susan Lewis, was awarded the Tom Cockerham scholarship, which was formed to honor the memory of long-time board member Tom Cockerham. Lewis will attend Wilkes Community College.
