Local Students Awarded Scholarships from Blue Ridge Electric (Watauga)

Boone, North Carolina (August 9, 2004) – As part of its commitment to community, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation has awarded scholarships to several local students in the cooperative’s service area.
The scholarships are designed to assist students in their educational goals and are awarded annually to deserving high school seniors and adults living within the cooperative’s service territory. This year Blue Ridge Electric offered five $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors seeking a four-year degree and seven $800 scholarships to students seeking a two-year vocational/technical degree. Students from Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes Counties were eligible for up to ten Goodman-Hurt Scholarships totaling $14,000.
Stevie Icard, daughter of Jacquelyn Vines of Boone, received a Goodman-Hurt $2,000 scholarship. She will attend Mars Hill University.
Receiving $88 Goodman-Hurt Scholarships were: Grace Coffey, daughter of Charles and Meleah Coffey of Boone, who will attend Guildord Technical Community College; and Crystal Jackson, daughter of Anita Jackson of Boone, who will attend CCC&TI.
Applications for the scholarships are available each year through local high school guidance counselors, community colleges in the Blue Ridge Electric service territory, or on-line at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com.
