Local Students Awarded Scholarships from Blue Ridge Electric (Caldwell)

Lenoir, North Carolina (August 9, 2004) – As part of its commitment to community, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation has awarded scholarships to several local students in the cooperative’s service area.

The scholarships are designed to assist students in their educational goals and are awarded annually to deserving high school seniors and adults living within the cooperative’s service territory. This year Blue Ridge Electric offered five $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors seeking a four-year degree and seven $800 scholarships to students seeking a two-year vocational/technical degree. Students from Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes Counties were eligible for up to ten Goodman-Hurt Scholarships totaling $14,000.

In Caldwell County, Stephanie Barnes, daughter of Terry and Virginia-Ruth Barnes of Lenoir, received a Goodman-Hurt $2,000 scholarship. She will attend the University of North Carolina-Asheville. Jiles Stanbury, son of Edgar and Kimberly Stanbury of Lenoir, received a Goodman-Hurt $800 scholarship. He will attend Catawba Valley Community College.

Students from Caldwell County also applied for the Charles Suddreth Scholarship, an $800 scholarship for a vocational/technical degree that is awarded in memory of long-time Blue Ridge Electric board member, Charles Suddreth. Lorray Bentley, daughter of Melinda Bentley of Patterson, received this scholarship. Bentley will attend Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI).

Applications for the scholarships are available each year through local high school guidance counselors, community colleges in the Blue Ridge Electric service territory, or on-line at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com.
