Lenoir, North Carolina (January 29, 2004) – Each year, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation proudly sponsors two leadership development opportunities for rising high school seniors living within the cooperative’s service area.

Washington Youth Tour

In June, Blue Ridge Electric provides up to four rising seniors with an all-expenses-paid, week-long trip to Washington, D.C. The Washington Youth Tour provides the participants a chance to join students from across the nation for a fun learning experience.

The trip begins on June 13 and includes: visiting historic sites, learning about rural electrification, meeting North Carolina elected officials, and seeing the federal government in action. The participants in the Washington Youth Tour are also able to compete for several college scholarships.

The applications for the Youth Tour include short essays and an interview. They are available online at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com or through high school guidance counselors. The applications must be submitted by March 15, 2004.

Broyhill Leadership Conference

Blue Ridge Electric also encourages students from the cooperative’s service area to apply for one of the seven available opportunities to attend the five-day Broyhill Leadership Conference at Belmont Abby College in Gaston County.

Blue Ridge sponsors students in grades 10 through 12 who are nominated by their guidance counselor. The highly-acclaimed conference is held every summer and provides participating students with an understanding and usage of goal setting, motivational techniques, group dynamics, communication, and cooperation.

Applications are available through high school guidance counselors who will select the 2004 Broyhill Leadership Conference winners.

Blue Ridge Electric is a member-owned cooperative utility serving some 66,000 consumers in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes counties. Its subsidiary, Blue Ridge Energies, provides propane, heating fuels and related appliances from offices in Lenoir, Boone, West Jefferson, and Hickory.
