Scholarships Available From Blue Ridge Electric

Lenoir, North Carolina (January 29, 2004) – As part of Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation’s commitment to local communities and its emphasis on education, each year the cooperative offers several scholarship opportunities for local high school seniors and adults.

Scholarships for the 2004-2005 academic year are now open for applications. The scholarships are awarded based upon the following requirements: demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, motivation, and personal interviews. All scholarships are for students living in the cooperative’s service territory.

Blue Ridge Electric will award a total of $14,000 through ten scholarships for students in the following counties: Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes. Five $2,000 Goodman-Hurt Scholarships are available for students seeking a bachelor’s degree. For students seeking a two-year degree, five $800 Goodman-Hurt Scholarships are available.

In addition, two memorial scholarships in the amount of $800 each are available. The Tom Cockerham Scholarship is available for Ashe County residents and the Charles Suddreth Scholarship is available for Caldwell County residents. These scholarships were created by the families of two former board members of Blue Ridge Electric.

Applications for all Blue Ridge Electric scholarships are available from high school guidance counselors, your local Blue Ridge Electric office, the financial aid office of Wilkes Community College and Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute . Students may also apply online at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com.

The deadline for all scholarship applications is March 31, 2004.

Blue Ridge Electric is a member-owned cooperative utility serving some 66,000 consumers in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes counties. Its subsidiary, Blue Ridge Energies, provides propane, heating fuels and related appliances from offices in Lenoir, Boone, West Jefferson, and Hickory.
