Applications Being Accepted for Bright Ideas Grants

Lenoir, North Carolina (August 19, 2002) – Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is now accepting applications for its Bright Ideas education grant program for the school year 2002-2003. Deadline for the grant applications is September 30.

A total of $18,000 will be awarded this year in amounts of up to $2,000 for individuals or teams of educators. Teachers and principals are encouraged to apply for the grants to fund creative and innovative educational programs in any area of the curriculum. Bright Ideas grants help provide funds for projects not covered by traditional school budgets.

The Bright Ideas grant program is sponsored by North Carolina’s electric cooperatives and their statewide organization, the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation (NCEMC).

Public school educators in the Blue Ridge Electric service area can receive more information or apply for Bright Ideas grants by logging on to the Blue Ridge Electric web site at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com and clicking on the Bright Ideas link.

Mailed applications should be postmarked by the deadline date of September 30th and mailed to Grey Scheer, director of community relations, PO Box 112, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Blue Ridge Electric is in its tenth year of providing Bright Ideas grants as part of its support of youth and education in the communities it serves. To date, the cooperative has awarded over $124,000 to 154 teachers to benefit 37,500 students.

Blue Ridge Electric is a cooperative utility serving over 63,000 members in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Alexander, and Wilkes counties.
