Lenoir, North Carolina (May 2, 2002) – Blue Ridge Electric recently helped local elementary schools celebrate Earth Day and teach environmental stewardship by donating a book on the topic to each schools’ media center.

“Dear Children of the Earth”, written and illustrated by Schim Schimmel, helps children understand their responsibility in protecting and taking care of the Earth and its natural resources. Schimmel is a professional artist who began writing stories to accompany his artwork and emphasize his concern for our Earth.

Blue Ridge Electric places a strong emphasis on taking care of the environment. This year, the cooperative was one of only five electric utilities in the nation to win the prestigious Lines of Distinction Award for environmental stewardship in its rights of way practices. The cooperative also demonstrates its commitment by participating each year with local schools in the celebration of Earth Day.

Blue Ridge Electric is a cooperative serving over 64,000 consumers in Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes counties.
