Lenoir, North Carolina (February 16, 2001) – Two different youth leadership opportunities sponsored annually by Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation are now open for applications from area students.

Washington Youth Tour

Applications are due March 15 for the 2001 Washington Youth Tour, a weeklong trip to our nation’s capital that includes students from across America. The tour is sponsored locally by North Carolina Electric Cooperatives Association (NCEMC), and nationally by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) . Four rising high school seniors from the Blue Ridge Electric service area will be selected for this all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The trip, which begins June 16, is designed to give students a fun atmosphere for learning about electric cooperatives and the business philosophy of cooperatives. The trip includes visiting historic sights, meeting North Carolina elected officials, and watching our government in action. Electric cooperative officials host the students and coordinate their activities for the week.

In addition, students who attend the Youth Tour are eligible to apply for several college scholarships affiliated with NRECA.

Individual short essays and personal interviews with Blue Ridge Electric personnel determine Youth Tour winners. Applications are available from local high school guidance counselors or on-line at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com.

Broyhill Leadership Conference

Blue Ridge Electric will sponsor up to seven students from its service area to attend the highly acclaimed Broyhill Leadership Conference at Belmont Abby College this summer.

The five-day conference is available to any student in grades 10 through 12 who is nominated by his or her guidance counselor. Young people from across the nation will participate in the conference, which is designed to lead students to an understanding and usage of goal setting, motivational techniques, group dynamics, communication, and cooperation.

Two conference sessions are being held: June 17-21 and June 29-July 3.

Applications are available from local high school guidance counselors, who make the final selection of the 2001 Broyhill Leadership Conference winners. March 31 is the deadline to receive applications for this opportunity.
