Blue Ridge Electric Announces Scholarship Opportunities

Lenoir, North Carolina (February 12, 2001) – Lenoir, North Carolina (February 12, 2001) – As part of its commitment to local communities and an emphasis on education, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation announces that is now accepting applications for $15,600 in scholarships sponsored annually by the cooperative.

The scholarships are awarded to high school seniors and adults living within the cooperative’s service territory who are seeking a higher education. Residents from Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes counties are eligible to apply. Scholarships available are:

4-Year Degree Goodman-Hurt Scholarships
Five Goodman-Hurt scholarships worth $2,000 each will be awarded to selected high school seniors seeing four-year degrees at a college or university.

2-Year Goodman-Hurt Scholarships
Available to high school seniors and adults seeking a two-year degree from a community college are five Goodman-Hurt scholarships worth $800 each.

Tom Cockerham and Charles Suddreth Scholarships
The Tom Cockerham and Charles Suddreth scholarships are both $800 scholarships formed to honor former board members of the cooperative. The Tom Cockerham scholarship is awarded each year to one Ashe County resident seeking a 2-year degree. The Charles Suddreth scholarship, also an $800 award, goes to a Caldwell County resident seeking a 2-year degree.

Applications for the scholarships are available on-line at www.BlueRidgeEMC.com or from local high school guidance counselors, community colleges in the Blue Ridge Electric service territory. Deadline for returning applications is March 31.
