Raleigh, North Carolina (April 25, 2000) – Jason Blevins, a senior at Ashe County High School in West Jefferson, was recently awarded the $2,000 Katie Bunch Scholarship by the Volunteers Committee of North Carolina’s electric cooperatives.

Jason is the son of Jimmy Blevins and Debbie Cozart. He was eligible for the award as a result of his participation in the Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. this past summer. Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation sponsored him on the tour, which hosted 45 students chosen by electric cooperatives across the state to participate in the annual weeklong summer trip to the nation’s capital.

The scholarship is named for the late Katie Bunch, a charter member of the Women’s Committee of Pee Dee Electric in Wadesboro. She was active in cooperative programs for nearly 20 years and held local and statewide offices.
Jason has been accepted to North Carolina State University and plans to major in computer engineering. He is involved in Future Business Leaders of America, Beta Club, and the Math Club. He has also volunteered his time to Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child and the Interagency Christmas Program.

North Carolina’s electric cooperatives are each member-owned, not-for-profit organizations that are overseen by a board of directors elected by the membership. Blue Ridge Electric serves over 60,000 members in Ashe, Alleghany, Watauga, Caldwell, and Wilkes counties.
