Lenoir, North Carolina (April 24, 2000) – To help local schools celebrate Earth Day and build awareness of environmental stewardship, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation recently provided all area elementary school libraries with the book One Good Apple: Growing our Food for the Sake of the Earth.
Almost 500 books have been distributed to elementary school libraries in the service territory of the cooperative. This is the tenth year Blue Ridge Electric has donated a book to local schools in honor of Earth Day.
The 48-page hardcover book by Cathrine Paladino donated by the cooperative received recommendations from area school media coordinators and national book reviews. According to Cathy Lyday, media coordinator for Granite Falls Elementary School, One Good Apple will be a popular book for all students. “This book combines great photography, attractive design and eloquent words to make every reader, young and old, think and care more about our health and our environment,” said Lyday.
“Blue Ridge Electric believes that northwest North Carolina is one of the most beautiful areas in the United States,” said Grey Scheer, director of community relations for Blue Ridge Electric. Scheer coordinates the book selection and presentation process.
“We also believe that being a good steward of the land is good business. That’s why we take time out of our daily work to help students celebrate Earth Day, and we hope this belief is passed on to our local students and future leaders,” explained Grey Scheer,
Blue Ridge Electric is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative serving 61,000 members primarily in Ashe, Alleghany, Caldwell, Watauga and Wilkes counties.
