Scholarship Applications

Application forms are provided in the box on the left. These forms are .pdf files and require Acrobat Reader for viewing and printing. (Click here for a free download of Acrobat Reader if you do not already have it on your computer. Please be patient - this webpage may take a few moments to open.) Your guidance counselor should also have applications available.

How to Apply

Look to the left and choose the application form for the scholarship you are appling for. Print out the appropriate form and submit it along with the required items listed below to the address at the bottom of this page.

Applications will be considered when the following information is received:

1. A typed letter stating your reason for applying. Indicate special needs, family circumstances and how you plan to finance your education.
2. On a separate sheet of paper, list extracurricular activities, memberships in clubs, offices held, honors received, and any involvement in church, sports, or community.
3. A copy of the front page of your family's most recent completed tax return. If your parents are separated or divorced, you must also submit a copy of a tax return for the parent you're not living with.

Very Important: Only complete applications will be considered. All information must be submitted at one time prior to the deadline. Due to the volume of applications received, Blue Ridge Electric is not responsible for notifying you if your application is incomplete.

Selection Procedure

Selection is based on the following criteria:

1. Definite financial need....................50%
2. Academic achievement...................25%
3. Motivation/Interview......................25%

If You Are a Finalist

Finalists will be interviewed by a committee. Finalists will be requested to submit a complete transcript from high school or college, including results of entrance exams, class rank, GPA, SAT, etc. Please do not include with your initial application. Scholarship winners may be asked to attend an orientation session and supply a color photograph.

If You Are Not a Finalist

Students not selected as finalists will be contacted by e-mail (only) in late April.

Conditions

1. All Blue Ridge Electric scholarships are one-year scholarships designated for the first year of post-secondary education, and are not renewable.
2. If a recipient forfeits rights to a Blue Ridge Electric scholarship within the acedemic year of receipt, remaining funds will be awarded to another student.
3. If the winner of a Blue Ridge Electric scholarship learns that he or she is to receive a FULL scholarship from another source, they must notify Blue Ridge Electric and relinquish this scholarship, which will then be awarded to another student.
4. Blue Ridge Electric reserves the right to make the initial announcement of scholarship winners. Recipients of Blue Ridge Electric scholarships may be recognized at high school awards day functions or at graduation exercises.
5. Management of Blue Ridge Electric has authority to render decisions regarding questions that are not answered in this brochure.
6. Once a scholarship has been awarded, monies cannot be transferred to another college.
7. All monies will be paid to two parties, the scholarship recipient and the college.

Payment of Scholarship

In order to receive payment, scholarship recipients must send a copy of their fall schedule to Blue Ridge Electric, PO Box 112, Lenoir, NC 28645. The cooperative will then pay half of the total scholarship with a check made out to both the college and the student. Checks will be mailed to student's home address.

Prior to the second semester, the recipient must send a copy of their spring schedule. Final payment will be made in January.
