Heat Pumps
From what it is to why they're great, to operating tips, here is everything you need to know about heat pumps.
What is a heat pump?
- A heat pump does just what its name suggests - it pumps heat.
- In the summer, it moves heat out of your house.
-
In the winter. it moves heat into your home.
How does a heat pump cool and heat?
When it's hot outside, the heat pump functions as a central air conditioner. Circulating air is chilled and dehumidified as it passes through the cold coils.
During the heating season, the outdoor coil extracts heat from outside air. The compressor pumps the heat to the indoor coil where the indoor fan circulates warm air throughout home.
How efficient are the new high-efficiency heat pumps?
Very efficient! A heat pump makes use of the existing heat in the air by simply transferring it from one place to another. A heat pump can supply two to three times more heat than the energy it uses. All heat pumps are rated for their Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) which refers to the operating efficiency over the heating season, and the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) which applies to the cooling performance of a heat pump or traditional air conditioner over the cooling season. A higher HSPF & SEER signifies a more efficient heat pump.
What size will I need?
Proper heat pump sizing is very important for your comfort and operating efficiency. Your heating and cooling contractor should do a heat loss / gain calculation to determine the appropriate size. Factors such as square footage, windows, amount of insulation, etc. are taken into consideration.
