Brian Crutchfield began work at Blue Ridge Electric in 1988 as the Manager of Economic and Community Development. He became the Director of Commercial and Industrial Development in 1997 and was named Director of Economic Development in 2000. Brian provides economic development and business development to a four-county service area.

Brian has been actively involved in economic development for more than twenty years. His efforts earned him the Economic Development Ally of the Year Award in 1998 from the North Carolina Economic Developers Association and the Professional of the Year Award in 1998 from the National Rural Economic Developers Association. These awards recognized his contributions in several significant economic development projects that leveraged more than $80 million in corporate investments and the creation of more than 600 jobs. He was also presented with the Community Recognition Award from the Boone Chamber of Commerce in 1998. The award recognizes his leadership with the Watauga County Community Foundation and the Watauga County Economic Development Commission. He is on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center and the National Rural Economic Developers Association.

Prior to joining Blue Ridge, he was an economic development specialist for ten years with the Tennessee Valley Authority in Knoxville, Tennessee. He holds a master’s degree in regional planning from Virginia Tech and a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
